Aditya Hrudayam

tato yuddhaparishrāntaṃ samarecintayā sthitam |
rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam ||

After the long fight, Rama stood tired and worried on the battlefield.
Ravana stood in front of him ready to fight.

daivataiśca samāgamya dṛṣṭumabhyāgato raṇam |
upāgamyā bravīdrāmamagastyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ||

The sage Agastya had come with the gods to watch the war.
He came to Rama and spoke to him.

rāma rāma mahābāho śṛṇu guhyaṃ sanātanam |
yena sarvānnarīn vatsa samare vijayiṣyasi ||

"O mighty Rama! Listen to this ancient and secret teaching.
With this, you will surely win over all enemies in battle."

ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam |
jayāvahaṃ japennityamakṣayyaṃ paramaṃ śivam ||

The Aditya Hridayam is holy and destroys all enemies.
Chanting it daily brings victory and endless blessings.

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam |
cintāśokapraśamanaṃ āyurvardhanamuttamam ||

It is the greatest blessing and washes away all sins.
It removes worry and sorrow, and extends one's life.

raśmimantaṃ samudyantaṃ devāsurana maskṛtam |
pūjayasva vivasvantaṃ bhāskaraṃ bhuvaneśvaram ||

Worship the Sun, rising with rays, honored by gods and demons,
the brilliant Vivasvat, light-maker and lord of all worlds.

sarvadēvātmakō hyēṣa tējasvī raśmibhāvanaḥ |
ēṣa dēvāsuragaṇāṃllōkān pāti gabhastibiḥ ||

He is all gods in one, brilliant, sustaining all life with his rays.
He guards all worlds, gods and demons included, with his light.

ēṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ |
mahēndrō dhanadaḥ kālō yamaḥ sōmō hyapāṃ patiḥ ||

He is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, and the Lord of creation.
Also Indra, Kubera, Death, Yama, the Moon, and Varuna.

pitarō vasavaḥ sādhyā aśvinau marutō manuḥ |
vāyurvahniḥ prajāprāṇa ṛtukartā prabhākaraḥ ||

He is the ancestors, the Vasus, the Ashvins, the wind gods, and Manu.
Also wind, fire, the life of all beings, the maker of seasons — the Radiant one.

ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān |
suvarṇasadṛśo bhānurhiraṇyaretā divākaraḥ ||

He is the Sun in many forms — sky-traveler, nourisher, and ray-bearer.
Golden like the sun, the seed of creation, and maker of the day.

haridaśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ saptasaptirmarīcimān |
timironmathanaḥ śambhustvṣṭā mārtāṇḍa aṃśumān ||

He rides green horses, blazes with a thousand rays, and drives a seven-horsed chariot.
He destroys darkness, brings joy, and is the rayed Martanda.

hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śiśirastapano bhāskaro raviḥ |
agnigarbho'diteḥ putraḥ śaṃkhaḥ śiśiranāśanaḥ ||

He is the golden womb of creation, the cool one, the scorcher, and the shining Ravi.
He holds fire within, is Aditi's son, and destroys cold and frost.

vyomanāthastamobhēdī ṛgyajuḥsāmapāragaḥ |
ghanavṛṣṭirapāṃ mitro vindhyavīthīplavangamaḥ ||

Lord of the sky, he pierces darkness and masters all three Vedas.
He sends rain, befriends water, and races swiftly through the sky.

ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarvataāpanaḥ |
kavirviśvo mahātejā raktaḥ sarvabhavodbhavaḥ ||

He blazes fiercely, has a glowing disc, is death to foes, and heats all creation.
He is all-knowing, immensely brilliant, red-hued, and the source of all life.

nakṣatragrahatārāṇāmadhipo viśvabhāvanaḥ |
tejasāmapi tejasvī dvādaśātman namo'stu te ||

He rules over stars, planets, and constellations and upholds the universe.
Most brilliant of all brilliance — O Sun of twelve forms, I bow to you!

namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ |
jyotirgaṇānāṃ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ ||

Bow to the eastern mountain where the sun rises, and to the western where it sets.
Bow to the lord of all lights and the ruler of the day.

jayāya jayabhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ |
namo namaḥ sahasrāṃśo ādityāya namo namaḥ ||

Repeated bows to the victorious, the auspicious, and the green-horsed sun.
Again and again, bow to Aditya with his thousand rays.

nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ |
namaḥ padmaprabōdhāya mārtāṇḍāya namo namaḥ ||

Bow to the fierce, the heroic, and the swift-moving sun.
Bow to the one who opens the lotuses — the great Martanda.

brahmēśānācyutēśāya sūryāyādityavarcasē |
bhāsvate sarvabhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ ||

Bow to the Sun who gives power to Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu with his radiance.
Bow to the blazing, all-consuming one with a fierce form.

tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane |
kṛtaghnaghṅāya devāya jyotiṣāṃ pataye namaḥ ||

Bow to the one who destroys darkness, cold, and enemies — the infinite one.
Bow to the divine punisher of the ungrateful and lord of all lights.

taptacāmīkarābhāya vahnaye viśvakarmaṇe |
namastamo'bhinighnāya rucaye lōkasākṣiṇe ||

Bow to the one blazing like melted gold — the cosmic fire and builder of the universe.
Bow to the destroyer of darkness, the radiant witness of all the worlds.

nāśayatyeṣa vai bhūtaṃ tadeva sṛjati prabhuḥ |
pāyatyeṣa tapatyeṣa varṣatyeṣa gabhastibiḥ ||

He destroys all beings and creates them again — the supreme lord.
With his rays, he nourishes, he heats, and he brings rain.

eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ |
eṣa evāgnihōtraṃ ca phalaṃ caivāgnihōtriṇām ||

He remains awake within all beings even when they sleep.
He is both the sacred fire ritual and the reward gained by those who perform it.

vedāśca kratavaścaiva kratūnāṃ phalameva ca |
yāni kṛtyāni lōkeṣu sarva eṣa raviḥ prabhuḥ ||

He is the Vedas, all sacred rituals, and the rewards they bring.
Whatever is done in all the worlds, Ravi is the lord behind it all.

enamāpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca |
kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścinnāvasīdati rāghava ||

In danger, hardship, wilderness, and moments of fear —
O Raghava, whoever sings this hymn shall never come to ruin.

pūjayasvainamekāgro devadevaṃ jagatpatim |
etat triguṇitaṃ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyasi ||

With full focus, worship the god of gods, the lord of all creation.
Chant this three times and you will win this battle.

asmin kṣaṇe mahābāho rāvaṇaṃ tvaṃ vadhiṣyasi |
evamuktvā tadāgastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam ||

"O great Rama, you will kill Ravana right now!"
Having spoken, Agastya left as quietly as he had come.

etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko'bhavattadā |
dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān ||

Hearing these words, the radiant Rama let go of all his sorrow.
With a joyful and disciplined mind, Raghava remembered the hymn.

ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṃ harṣamavāptavān |
trirācamya śucirbhūtvā dhanurādāya vīryavān ||

He looked at the Sun, chanted the hymn, and was filled with great joy.
He sipped water three times to purify himself and lifted his mighty bow.

rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat |
sarvayatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto'bhavat ||

With a glad heart, he faced Ravana and stepped forward to fight.
He resolved with all his might to bring about Ravana's death.

atha raviravadannirīkṣya rāmaṃ muditamanāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ |
niśicarapatisaṃkṣayaṃ viditvā suragaṇamadhyagato vacastvareti ||

Then the Sun, overjoyed, looked at Rama and said —
Knowing Ravana's end was near, amid the gods, the Sun urged: "Hurry!"
